Continuing to Improve Our Emissions Reduction Commitments

WE’RE INVESTING AND INNOVATING FOR A BETTER FUTURE.

The chemicals sector, including Chemours, plays a central and complex role in the transition to a low-carbon economy due to the current and future demand for chemicals that enable low-carbon and energy-saving technologies. As the sector grows to meet this need, it must do so while reducing its emissions.

Our 2021 Climate Highlights

  • Reduced operations greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 18% relative to our 2018 baseline, even with a return to normal production
  • Made substantial progress toward our 2030 CRC goal in 2021, reducing air fluorinated organic compound (FOC) process emissions 34% from our 2018 baseline
  • Joined the U.S. Department of Energy Better Climate Challenge with a commitment to reduce energy intensity by 17% and reduce GHG emissions by 50% within 10 years
  • Completed two significant energy reduction projects related to collecting steam condensate onsite and reusing it for steam production reducing site CO₂ by ~300 metric tons per year at our Dordrecht, Netherlands site
  • Achieved carbon-free energy at our Mechelen, Belgium site
  • Conducted multi-day, cross-departmental Energy Brainstorming sessions to generate “outside of the box” energy reduction ideas at 10 sites

Continuing Our Journey to Net Zero

Our total emissions increased in 2021, as our production returned to normal after slowing in 2020 due to COVID-19. However, we still made significant progress achieving an 18% reduction relative to our 2018 baseline. Our progress was largely due to targeted emissions reduction initiatives completed in late 2019 and 2020 and improved operational efficiencies at several of our Thermal & Specialized Solutions (TSS) and Advanced Performance Materials (APM) manufacturing sites.

We continue to work on capital programs and to secure renewable power for our sites. For example, we completed two significant energy reduction projects at our Dordrecht, Netherlands site related to collecting steam condensate onsite and reusing it for steam production. And we secured renewable power for our sites in Starke, Florida, Louisville, Kentucky and New Johnsonville, Tennessee, with emissions reductions benefits to occur when the projects go live in 2022.
