The Chemours Johnsonville Site opened in 1958 in New Johnsonville, Tennessee and is one of the world’s largest producers of titanium dioxide (TiO2), a naturally occurring mineral used as a white pigment to provide superior opacity and bright white color to paints, plastics, inks and paper. We employ approximately 900 employees and contractors from Humphreys and Benton Counties and the surrounding area.

Located on the east side of Kentucky Lake, Chemours is situated on 1,500 acres with 200 acres devoted to manufacturing, and the remainder set aside as undeveloped and home to local wildlife including deer, wild turkeys, a variety of bass and catfish species, bald eagles and osprey. We neighbor the Johnsonville State Historic Park and work closely with the U.S. Forestry Service on land management and wildlife habitat initiatives.

Our Products

The Johnsonville site produces a wide range of Ti-Pure™ grades of TiO2 for customers across all major markets and regions of the world. Our product is critical in preserving, protecting, and beautifying; it is a key ingredient to providing the basic needs of food and shelter. Many of our plastics pigment grades are used in hygienic films, which keep medical personnel on the front line safe. Plastic films and packaging are also widely used in agriculture to keep fresh food viable longer and are critical to optimizing our food supply.

As production has grown, the Johnsonville plant has significantly reduced emissions, and in 2013 the site received the Tennessee OSHA Governor’s Award for Safety Performance.

Our Community and Education

The Chemours Johnsonville Site has a long history as a premier employer in the area and has fostered strong community partnerships with local schools and Nashville State Community College (NSCC). As schools reopened during the pandemic, Chemours Johnsonville provided a COVID-19 grant in the amount of $25,000 allowing Humphreys County schools to increase safety measures in hard to social distance areas.

In 2014, we partnered with NSCC to create an apprenticeship program that is part of the curriculum for associate degrees in Industrial Process Control Technology and Maintenance Technology. Chemours not only provided input to the in-class and online learning, it provides hands-on learning opportunities that also help students pay for the education. This program has since been recognized across the State of Tennessee as a best practice.

The site and its employees are proud to be the largest donors to the United Way of Humphreys County and one of the largest contributors in the entire state of Tennessee. In the fall of 2018, we celebrated 60 years of operation and being the largest private employer in Humphreys County.

Chemours Johnsonville maintains a widespread interest in the community. Since 2017, we have made over 150 sponsorships to schools, scholarships, community events and agencies in Humphreys and the surrounding counties. From scouting, to local sports, to state park events and more; our site continuously sponsors and supports organizations and events of local interest.

Our Commitment to Safety, Health and the Environment

Since its founding in 2015, Chemours has held Safety Obsession, along with Unshakable Integrity, as foundational values across all parts of the company. In 2018, we built upon that foundation by implementing 10 ambitious Corporate Responsibility Commitment goals covering people, safety, health, and the environment. These goals have become part of the strategy, culture, and day-to-day operations at Chemours. They include the reduction of landfill volume intensity by 70%, a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 60%, and being the only company in our industry committed to being carbon-positive by 2050, among others.

Chemours production facilities are certified under the American Chemical Council’s Responsible Care Management System and the International Organization for Standardization’s ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. To achieve certification, a company must undergo an in-depth, independent review of its integrated health, safety, security and environmental management policies and practices. We continuously strive to improve our operational efficiency and safety while diligently working to reduce our environmental footprint.

Chemours Johnsonville has been recognized by OSHA as a Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) Star Site since 1997. The official recognition is awarded to companies whose management and labor establish cooperative relationships at workplaces to implement a comprehensive safety and health management system.

Our facility maintains an on-site Chemical Emergency Response Team consisting of experts trained in hazardous materials handling and disposal. They conduct training with local police, firefighters, and other emergency responders and are on call for emergencies within the Chemours facilities.

We are also a member of the Humphreys County Local Emergency Planning Committee, a cooperative effort including leadership representatives from local industries, city and county government entities, state and local law enforcement agencies, and emergency response organizations. In the fall of 2019, Chemours Johnsonville provided a $13,000 donation to the Humphreys County Emergency Management Agency for the purchase of rescue equipment.
