We commit to being good corporate citizens, upstanding stewards of our local environmental resources, and good neighbors with Unshakable Integrity, one of our values. This is the driving force behind our Vibrant Communities goal to invest $50 million in our communities by 2030. We aim to enhance the communities where we live and operate by increasing access to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education; engaging in safety initiatives; and expanding sustainable environment programs.

Expanding Our STEM Education Programs

To ensure we’re helping to find and inspire the next generation of innovators, we partner with schools in communities where we operate to provide early access to STEM education. In 2021, we committed over $4 million to launch the Chemours Future of Engineering, Science, Trades and Technology School Partnership Program (ChemFEST), a global school partnership program aimed at building a diverse STEM talent pipeline. In the program’s inaugural year, we launched programs near our New Johnsonville and Chambers Works sites and our Wilmington, Delaware, headquarters with plans to launch additional programs in 2022. Leveraging our company’s financial resources and our employee’s time and talent, the program introduces students from under-resourced middle schools to STEM careers early in their education. This program is a natural extension of our existing STEM partnerships and scholarships for high school and college-bound students.

Chemours Launches ChemFEST

Consistent Engagement with Our Communities

All Chemours manufacturing locations have active community feedback mechanisms or Community Advisory Boards (CABs)—a diverse group of community members representing the voice of those living near the sites. In 2021, most Chemours US manufacturing sites began evaluating the composition of their CAB membership to ensure diverse representation from all areas of our communities. Some of our 2021 CAB initiatives included:

In Louisville, Kentucky, our Rubbertown CAB engaged with the community on diversity, equity and inclusion (ED&I), community beautification, and sustainability and health initiatives.
In Ingleside, Texas, we reorganized and expanded our CAB to include an additional seven sites. Community outreach included our environmental, health, and safety performance; manufacturing and product overviews; site demographics; state-of-business updates; and community activities.
In Fayetteville, NC, our CAB completed a stakeholder assessment, hosted visits with elected officials and conducted educational outreach. They also created a website to solicit community feedback and began recertification of its designated 1,500 acres of Wildlife Habitat Area.

Case Studies

A Big Turnout for Corporate Responsibility Commitment (CRC) Day

We hosted our third-annual global Corporate Responsibility Commitment Day on November 8, which coincided with National STEM Awareness Day and the launch of our ChemFEST program. To mark the event, we asked employees around the globe to take one action to advance our 2030 CRC goals, while adhering to COVID-19 protocols in their respective countries or states. Some employees participated in socially distanced community service projects, while others hosted educational webinars, ideation sessions, or vendor meetings. The result was more than 1,500 hours of service by hundreds of employees who participated in 68 events across 30 locations in 13 countries.

FOSSI—An Industry-Wide Scholarship Program

Chemours is a founding member of the Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI), which provides scholarships to students pursuing STEM degrees at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and connects them to internships, leadership development, and mentoring opportunities at participating companies. In May 2021, the program surpassed its goal to fund scholarships for 150 students in its inaugural year—ultimately providing 151 scholarships through a $7.2 million investment. Across the country, nearly 1,700 high school students applied for FOSSI scholarships. The recipients represent 26 states with students attending 23 HBCUs.

Committed to Aiding and Assisting Our Communities

As a Responsible Care® company, we have made a commitment to aid and assist the communities in which we work and live. Based on that commitment, we created our Community Awareness Emergency Response (CAER) outreach program to help our company and surrounding communities prepare for any situation that may arise. In 2021, Chemours reached 2,304 external responders globally, including firefighters, hazardous materials responders, community leaders, emergency management leaders, and law enforcement officers. In August 2021, the communities surrounding our New Johnsonville (JV), Tennessee site were struck with record-setting rainfall and devastating flash floods. Our JV employees went above and beyond to rescue stranded neighbors and colleagues, deliver supplies, and provide support to address the destruction caused by the floods.

Supporting the Family Forest Carbon Program

Through our Vibrant Communities initiative, Chemours is providing a $260,000 grant to support the expansion of the Family Forest Carbon Program (FFCP) in West Virginia. Our funding will enable incentives to enroll 6,500 acres of family-owned forest land—one acre for each of Chemours' 6,500 employees—to implement management practices aimed at growing the economic and environmental value of their forested properties over time. FFCP is designed to benefit the climate as well as biodiversity, wildlife enhancement, and clean water. To date, the program has been piloted in 16 counties in Pennsylvania.
